Happy Apple Month!!!
Autumn is here and so is apple season! The crunchy, juiciness of a ripe apple is one of the best things about fall. Whether eating a slice on the go, packing it in your lunch, or baking a pie or tart, apples are a versatile fruit that appeal to just about everyone!
Apples have long since been considered “nature’s toothbrush” because their thick skins and fibrous flesh are just the right texture to act like a toothbrush. In addition, the act of eating an apple stimulates the gums and produces saliva, which helps rinse away bacteria and food particles. Ultimately, apples are exceptional foods for your teeth and gums and for your overall health, packed with nutrients, vitamins, and fiber to give you energy. But they do contain sugar and acid, which can be harmful to your teeth. Here are a few simple tips you can follow to ensure you keep a healthy and happy smile:
- Eat your apple in one sitting. Grazing leaves more acid and sugar on the teeth for a longer time.
- Eat apples with other foods. A slice of cheese or bread will help neutralize acids.
- Rinse your mouth with water to help wash away acid and sugar.
- Wait 30 minutes after eating an apple to brush your teeth to eliminate the risk of brushing away some of your enamel.
Together, let’s celebrate apples all month long. With many local orchards nearby, you can always pick some apples with family and friends to bring home and enjoy!
