Is Your Smile is Worth a Pot O’ Gold?
Irish or not, most Americans will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in some form this week. Who doesn’t love St. Patty’s Day?!? It’s silly, joyous and brings people together for some light-hearted fun. In the spirit of the Irish, St. Patty’s Day is often celebrated by donning green apparel and indulging in foods and drinks that are dyed various hues of green, beer being the most popular drink of choice. It’s no surprise that St. Patty’s Day is reported as the nation’s biggest drinking holiday.*
Did You Know?
- Drinks high in alcohol can dry out your mouth. Not only does this problem cause bad breath, it also boosts your chance of cavities. Saliva keeps teeth moist and helps to remove plaque and bacteria from the tooth’s surface.
- Beer is acidic. While different types of brews have different acidity levels, all beer puts your smile at risk. When large amounts of acid are introduced into the mouth, the protective layer of tooth enamel can potentially begin to wear away. Without this protective barrier, teeth may become increasingly sensitive.
- Drinking can cause your teeth to discolor. Dark Irish stouts, porters and even fruity drinks can increase this risk. Temporary staining is also a factor when green dye is added to your beverage.
- Alcohol abuse is the second most common risk factor for oral cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, individuals who suffer from alcohol dependency tend to have higher plaque levels on their teeth and are three times as likely to suffer from permanent tooth loss.
Help Protect Your Smile
- Drink in moderation. Alternate a beer with a glass of water to help rinse away excess sugars and acid.
- Avoid foods and beverages with green dye.
- Regardless of how late you get home, be sure to brush your teeth before going to bed.
- Visit your dentist. It is important to frequently check the health of your teeth and gums. Your dentist can also provide recommendations for getting your teeth bright, shiny and white again.
