Fun Dental Facts on World Giraffe Day
Happy Giraffe Day!
Did you know that the giraffe has 32 teeth just like humans do?
They also have a tongue that grows to be around 20-21 inches long. That is almost 2 feet!
However unlike humans, none of the giraffes teeth are found in the top front of their mouths, rather they are positioned in the lower portion and back of the mouth. Most of those teeth are molars – an excellent tool for grinding.
In place of upper teeth, giraffes have a hard plate or “dental pad” which helps them to grip leaves and twigs. This is a great adaptation knowing that a full grown giraffe can eat up to 100 pounds of leaves and twigs a day
