Crohn’s Disease, Colitis and Oral Health
Every year during the week of December 1 – 7 Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week are observed. Both Crohn’s and Colitis are forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
These chronic diseases affect the digestive system and cause intestinal tissue to become inflamed. Crohn’s specifically can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract including the lips, mouth and even the esophagus. In addition to the physical and emotional toll IBD has on the well-being of its patients such as weight loss, fever, nausea, diarrhea and anemia, it can also have a number of negative effects on oral health such as tooth decay, mouth ulcers and gum inflammation or gingivitis.
Please talk with your dentist if you notice any of these symptoms. Together you can find treatment options that are right for you.
