Affordable Care Act
With all of the information circulating about the new health care reform, otherwise known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), one question being asked in households across the United States is whether or not the reform includes dental coverage.
The simple answer is yes. However, the ACA only requires that certain health insurance plans offer affordable dental benefits for children.
It is estimated that over 1.5 million children who are currently not receiving dental care will now have access to benefits because of this requirement.
With the introduction of this dental coverage, there are two important features to be aware of: 1) cost-sharing and 2) out-of-pocket maximums. Unlike many medical preventative services, preventative pediatric dental services may be subject to cost sharing. This is where the patient pays for a portion of the dental costs such as meeting a deductible, providing a copay or paying a percentage of the services. Additionally, the out-of-pocket limit for children can vary with the standard being $700/child or $1400/multiple children.
