• Rethink Your Drink

Ah, summer!  Ice cold lemonade, refreshing juice, and other icy, cool drinks can really hit the spot on warm days; but they can also be filled with sugar.

Sugary drinks top the list of one of the most significant dietary sources of tooth decay.  Unfortunately, research shows we are drinking more and more of them, partly due to the increase in serving size.  In the 1950′s, a standard serving size was right around 6.5 ounces.  Today a small drink is 12 ounces and they only go up from there.

It is estimated that at least one in five kids drink a minimum of four servings of sugary drinks a day.  According to a case report, Northwest Dentistry, some teenagers drink as many as 12 soft drinks a day.  Children and adolescents aren’t the only people at risk. Long-term consumption of soft drinks, at any age, has a cumulative effect on tooth enamel. As people live longer, more will be likely to experience dental problems.

Take a look at your favorite drink…how does it measure up?
