Depression Drug Possible Cause of Implant Failure
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, also known as SSRI’s, are the most widely used drugs for the treatment of depression. SSRI’s have been reported to reduce bone formation and increase the risk of bone fractures. The initial data in a recent study suggests there is an increased risk of dental implant failure while using SSRI’s.
The study, conducted between January 2007 and January 2013, followed 490 patients with a total of 916 dental implants. 51 patients were SSRI users. SSRI users and nonusers were comparable in terms of age, sex, bone augmentation, smoking, habit, implant diameter, implant length, implant torque and follow-up period. The study found a 10.6 percent failure rate for patients using SSRI’s and only a 4.6 percent failure rate in nonusers.
