World Oral Health Day
March 20th is World Oral Health Day. This is great time to raise awareness of dentistry worldwide. Last year 106 countries joined in on the efforts to educate and treat people from all over the world. This year, the goal is to get every county involved somehow.
“It’s time. Time to smile. Time to laugh. Time to focus on oral health.”
Dental cavities are one of the most common diseases in the world. Research has demonstrated that sugars are the main cause of tooth decay (holes in your teeth). When you eat or drink something sugary, the bacteria in the plaque (the sticky film that keeps forming on your teeth) feeds on the sugar and releases acid that attacks teeth for about one hour. Frequent consumption of sugar allows prolonged acid ‘attacks’, weakening the protective outer layer of the teeth.
It’s time to smile for life with a healthy smile.
By following a few simple steps, you can help protect your smile. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks between meals and when on the go, try chewing sugar free gum after eating.
