    Happy 4th of July

We love the 4th and all that comes with it…barbecues, swimming, fireworks and most importantly, gathering with friends and family.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

While you are enjoying a little fun in the sun, here are a few quick tips to help you keep your smile as bright as the fireworks you see at night!

    • Try to avoid chewing on hard foods and candies.  Ice, pretzels and candy are common staples at many 4th of July BBQ’s.  If you can, try to avoid chewing on them to prevent you from chipping a tooth.  Instead, reach for the watermelon, cheese, and celery or carrot sticks.  If you do chip a tooth, rinse your mouth with clean, warm saltwater, take some over-the-counter pain relief medicine as needed and if you have to eat, try to avoid using the broken tooth; stick to soft foods.  Call your dentist to make an appointment as soon as you can.

    • Drink Water.  Lots of Water.  Drinking water will not only keep you hydrated in the warm weather (it has been so hot lately!) but it will also stimulate saliva in your mouth, which helps wash away bacteria.  If you go for a beer, soda or glass of wine, be sure to alternate water in between drinks.

    • Walk, Don’t Run.  Many tooth accidents or head and mouth trauma/accidents happen when running or rough-housing on concrete surfaces.  Pool areas are especially hazardous as they are wet and slippery.  Move your running games to the grass and remember to walk on the concrete surfaces to help avoid a trip to the emergency room.

    • Do not use your teeth to open packages or bottles.  Believe it or not, many people resort to their teeth when the bottle opener suddenly disappears.  This type of tooth injury makes up the largest percentage of BBQ related dental problems.

    • After your fun-filled day and you are ready to go home, be sure to brush your teeth before going to bed!

We hope everyone has a fun and safe 4th of July!
