Antidepressants Linked to Implant Failure
Antidepressant medication may relieve depression symptoms and help millions of patients worldwide; however, their benefits must be weighed with the side effects.
There are many known side effects reported with the use of antidepressants, however there are four that are a big concern to dentists regarding oral and bone health.
- Osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle.
- Akathisia, a disorder characterized by the need to be in constant motion, including the head and jaw.
- Bruxism or teeth grinding.
- Dryness of the mouth.
A new pilot study by researchers from the University of Buffalo have discovered that the use of antidepressants also increase the odds of implant failure fourfold and with each year of antidepressant use the odds of failure doubles.
Researchers plan to build on the study by retesting their results on a larger scale. For now, they advise those using antidepressants to consult with their physician about the drugs side effects and alternative methods of managing depression, anxiety or pain.
