Normal or Gross…Would You Share Your Toothbrush?

Forgetting your toothbrush during an overnight stay or accidentally swapping out the wrong brush can easily lead to sharing toothbrushes.  One social media poll taken in 2016 suggested that 54% of couples say sharing a toothbrush is normal, while 46% say it is gross.  Regardless of where you stand on the issue, sharing a toothbrush can cause an array of problems.

According to the American Dental Association, in recent years scientists have studied whether toothbrushes could harbor bacteria which could lead to infections or disease.  It is known that the mouth is home to hundreds of different germs and bacteria, so it is not surprising that some of them could be transferred to the toothbrush during use.  It may also be possible for germs or bacteria in the general area where your toothbrush is stored, to attach to your brush.  (We can save the discussion on whether you flush your toilet with the seat up or down for another day!)  Viruses and bacteria can live for weeks on a toothbrush surface and continue to cause illness.

That being said, sharing a toothbrush can mean you’re also sharing germs and bacteria; by doing so you may increase your risk for infection or disease. This could be a particular concern if you have a cold or flu to spread, or if you have a condition that leaves your immune system compromised.  It also means you are more susceptible to developing cavities or even gum disease.

While it is true that kissing, sharing food or drinks and holding hands can all cause the transfer of bacteria, sharing a toothbrush can prove to be much more harmful to your overall health.
