    Fluoride-Free Toothpaste in Question

Dental health experts worry that more people are using toothpaste that skips the most important ingredient – fluoride – and leaves them at a greater risk for cavities.

Most toothpaste already contains fluoride.  However more and more claims, often from natural toothpaste marketers and alternative medicine advocates, state that fluoride-free toothpaste also prevents cavities.

Despite scientific evidence, there are a growing number of consumers who believe that all toothpastes are the same and that as long as your brush your teeth, you can prevent decay.

    Dental authorities disagree.

There have been few studies regarding this in recent years because the value of fluoride has been widely accepted for decades.  In searching high-quality studies since 1950, only three were found.  Once evaluated as a whole, it was determined that there was no significant evidence of cavity reduction from simply brushing without fluoride.

Cavities can form in tiny crevices of the enamel that aren’t easily reached with a toothbrush or dental floss alone, so by combining fluoride toothpaste and rinses along with drinking fluoridated water, you can amplify the protection against the formation of cavities.
