• How Much Do You Know About Your Pet’s Dental Health?

Many pet owners spend time walking and grooming their pets but often do not think about brushing their pets’ teeth.  The California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) reports gingivitis and periodontal disease in dogs and cats have become widespread, and pet owners should take some simple actions to be sure their pet has good oral health.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month.    We care about your pets just like we care about you!

Have you ever thought about doing a root canal on a German Shepherd or casting the broken leg of a calf?  Dr. Rex has done both and enjoys sharing those experiences.  (You should ask him to tell you the stories sometime!)

Did you know that dental disease most often occurs below the gum line where you can’t see it?  Bacteria can damage the tissues connecting the teeth and jaw.  That’s why it is important to have your veterinarian regularly examine your pet’s teeth and perform regular professional dental cleanings.

Did you know that brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective thing you can do between professional cleanings.  Daily brushing is ideal, but we realize that’s not always realistic.  If you brush your pet’s teeth at least three times per week, you’re doing a great job!

Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of periodontal disease by the age of 3?

Do you know the warning signs of possible dental disease in pets?  Some symptoms are: redness of the gums, bad breath, loose teeth, discolored teeth, broken teeth, tenderness around the mouth and/or teeth, drooling or dropping food, bleeding from the mouth, loss of appetite and weight loss.  If you observe any of these problems, you should contact your veterinarian.

Just as it is true with us, regular exams throughout your pet’s life can help detect problems early, before they cause damage to your pet’s teeth, roots, bone, mouth and overall health.
