    Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for children.  Sucking on thumbs, fingers, pacifiers or other objects can help babies feel secure and happy and help them learn about their world.

However, sucking (especially with aggressive suckers) may cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth, alignment of the teeth and other dental problems.

Many children stop sucking their thumbs on their own, often by age 6 or 7 months, but typically no later than 4 years of age.

If you’re concerned about the effect of thumb sucking on your child’s teeth, check with your dentist.  They will be able to help make recommendations that are best for you and your child such as using positive reinforcements, identifying triggers, offering gentle reminders or using specialized devices.
