    Tooth Fairy Day

Wiggly and loose, who doesn’t remember the excitement of losing their first tooth and waking up in the morning to a little something from the Tooth Fairy?!?

The tradition of a child receiving a gift for a lost tooth can be traced back to medieval Europe, however in the 1920′s healthcare “fairies” evolved to help encourage children to eat their veggies, get fresh air, and brush their teeth.  The Tooth Fairy is comforting for many children, who often experience pain or fear when losing a tooth.

“Other than a dimple in a cute little chin, what’s more adorable than a toothless grin!” – Terri Guillemets

National Tooth Fairy Day is celebrated on February 28th and August 22nd.  Both of these dates coincide with other national events such as Children’s Dental Health Month in February and National Smile Week in August.

The tooth fairy is recognized all around the world and families have many different traditions to celebrate the loss of a child’s tooth, especially a first tooth.  Some such traditions are throwing the tooth on a roof, under a house, burying it under a tree or leaving it for a rodent.

However, one of the most famous traditions, which is very popular in the United States, is to leave the tooth under a pillow for the tooth fairy who will in turn leave some money, a small toy or a note.  Some people believe the tooth fairy makes a magic powder out of the collected teeth that protects her from danger. *

In the United States the tooth fairy is now leaving on average $3.70 per tooth, down from 2018. **
