Spring Clean Your Dental Care Routine

Spring is here!  Nothing marks the change of season like a good spring cleaning and a fresh start!  While you are busy organizing the closets and sweeping out those cobwebs, consider sprucing up your dental hygiene routine as well.

Here are a few simple steps to freshen up your normal routine.

    Update Your Toothbrush

With the cold months are on their way out, take a good look at your toothbrush.  The American Dental Association recommends getting a new one every three to four months (sooner if the bristles are frayed or you have been sick).

    • Consider Softer Bristles.  Protect your teeth by opting for softer bristles.  Brushing with firm or medium bristles may feel like your getting a good cleaning, but brushing too hard can lead to loss of enamel and receding gums.
    • Electric Toothbrushes.  Electric toothbrushes have proven to provide a thorough cleaning – a feature especially beneficial for those with limited mobility.

    Clean Your Toothbrush Holder

Replacing your toothbrush regularly helps keep things sanitary.  You may want to consider cleaning your toothbrush holder at the same time.

The container you keep your toothbrush in is exposed to all the same germs and bacteria as your other bathroom surfaces.  Don’t put your brand new toothbrush into a dirty container.  Wash it in warm, soapy water, wipe it down with disinfectant, or run it through the dishwasher once or twice a week to keep your toothbrush – and your mouth – clean.

    Check Expiration Dates

Just like you would check the expiration dates on food when you clean out the fridge, it is equally important to remember that your dental care products have expiration dates too.  Take a look at your mouthwash and toothpaste, and toss anything that has expired.  This might be a great time to switch up your products and try something new.

Set Up and Actual Spring Cleaning

When was your last dental check up?  If you are past due or coming due, now is a great time to get a professional cleaning scheduled.  Your dentist will polish away stains, remove tartar buildup and detect any potential problems.  It can also give you a chance to talk about any concerns you may have or get advise on your cleaning habits.
