Bruxism and Substance Abuse
Bruxism is the medical term for grinding the teeth or clenching the jaw. If you are one who has experienced the consequences associated with bruxism (sleep or awake) such as tooth wear, tooth fractures, toothaches, periodontal problems, muscle fatigue and headaches, you might be surprised to hear that new research has linked sleep bruxism to alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and drug use.
In a review of over 10,000 participants, the odds of having sleep bruxism increased almost 2 times for those who drank alcohol, almost 1.5 times for those who drank more than 8 cups of coffee per day, and more than 2 times for current smokers. While research is still ongoing for the association of drug use and sleep bruxism, researchers believe it cannot be discredited.
