Travel Tips For Your Teeth
Today is the first day of summer and if you are anything like us, you have been dreaming of your vacation. Whether you are off on a camping trip, catching a plane to an exotic destination or going on a road trip, here are a few things you should keep in mind this summer as you travel.
Make Time for a Checkup. Having a thorough exam before you leave on vacation could spot problems before they happen and provide you with peace of mind as you travel.
In Case of Emergency…It is always a good idea to have your dentist’s contact information handy, either in your cell phone or on a business card in your wallet. If you think you need to talk to someone, you probably do. Dental emergencies can happen at any time and being connected with your dentist could help resolve the issue over the phone or guide you in the right direction.
Forgot Your Toothbrush? As you race out the door you grab the sunscreen and the phone charger, but forget your toothbrush. If you find yourself temporarily without a toothbrush you can rinse vigorously with water to wash away some of the leftover food or cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. You could also put some toothpaste on a clean washcloth or your clean finger and gently rub your teeth and gums. When you can, find a local drugstore and look for a soft bristled brush!
Proper Toothbrush Care. When you are at home you air dry your toothbrush to help keep it clean, but that’s not always possible on vacation. Keeping your toothbrush clean and out of contact with other things is more important than making sure it is dry. A resealable plastic bag will keep your toothbrush separate from everything else in your luggage. When you get to where you are going, pop it out and let it air dry.
Pack Gum. Chewing sugarless gum can help relieve ear pressure during a flight – and help keep cavities at bay on vacation. Chewing gum gets saliva flowing, which can help wash away cavity-causing bacteria.
When In Doubt…If you are traveling in an area where the water supply is compromised, or you’re in the wilderness but aren’t sure how clean the stream is, always use bottled water when you brush your teeth to reduce the risk of getting sick.
Get Back on Track After Your Trip. If you let brushing and flossing slide – or indulged in too many sweets while away – just get back into your normal routine when you get home by brushing twice a day for two minutes and don’t forget to floss.
Protect Your Lips. If your adventures find you spending more time outdoors, when you apply sunscreen to protect your skin, you should also apply a lip balm, with an SPF 30 or more, to protect your lips. Drinking plenty of water will also help your lips -and body- stay healthy and hydrated. You should drink at least 8 to 9 glasses of water every day – even more if you are active or it is hot.
Bon Voyage! Wishing you safe, fun and healthy travels this summer!
