During Pregnancy, Nearly Half of Women Don’t See a Dentist
A recent national survey disclosed that 43 percent of women do not go for a dental checkup during pregnancy, even though 76 percent of those surveyed admitted to suffering from oral health problems while expecting, such as bleeding gums or toothaches.
801 expectant or new mothers between the ages of 21 to 45 participated in the survey. Half had dental benefits. Over one third of expectant mothers admitted that it has been more than a year since their last preventative dental visit; citing cost as the primary reason for skipping the checkups.
The survey found that by communicating the safety of dental checkups during pregnancy to expectant mothers, along with having medical doctors/obstetricians talk to women about their oral health, made them almost twice as likely to have a dental checkup while pregnant (77 percent versus 41 percent).
