    Breast Cancer Awareness Month

    Did you know…

    • About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
    • In 2019, an estimated 268,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.
    • About 2,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2019.  A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 883.

Invasive breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread from inside the milk ducts or lobules (glands) break out into nearby tissues.  The cancer cells can travel from the breast to other parts of the body through the blood stream or the lymphatic system.

Non-invasive breast cancer stays within the milk ducts or lobules in the breast.

    • For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
    • About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.  These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.
    • Women who have gum disease are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer.  75% of U.S. adults suffer from various forms of gum disease.
    • Oral complications for those who had chemotherapy could include sore gums, cavities, oral infections, and dry mouth.

Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says ‘I’ll try again tomorrow.’ – Mary Anne Radmacher
